Passive speakers have no built-in power supply, so need to be powered externally to produce sound. This is usually achieved with a PA system amplifier that can drive multiple speakers. Passive PA speakers are usually better if you need either a large system or are looking to expand in the future, as you can easily power them all using a small number of sources. They're also a lot lighter due to a lack of built-in electronics, meaning they're easier to cart around and can form a more portable PA system.
