Andertons' own Ben on working With Leigh and PJD
“We have a unique and close working relationship with Leigh and the PJD team since we began stocking their guitars back in 2021, The process for specifying guitars, new models and concepts is often an open discussion and results in some exceptional instruments at a great price”
“We loved the platform of the standard series guitars and wanted to have something a little different that you could only get at Anderton’s, so we came up with the “Stealth Edition” with upgraded features such as overwound pickups, painted black Headstock and ebony fingerboard for a more aggressive looking and sounding guitar, certainly a series aimed towards the alt-rock and metal players”
“My personal favourite model is “The York”; I’ve always loved the simplicity of a bolt-on neck, fixed bridge guitar and the York is just that with great styling and a unique body shape”
PJD’s Leigh on designing the Stealth Edition pickups:
“For the Stealth series of guitars we customised the PJD standard range of pickups to better suit the needs of the contemporary metal player. Our first instinct when making a metal pickup was to go with a high-output/high wind-count pickup. However, we felt that this is something of an outdated concept, due to the equipment that players use these days. Back in the day, you'd rock up to a gig and you could be pretty sure there'd be half a dozen 100W tube amps on the backline, waiting for the bands to set up before playing. Nowadays everyone uses digital emulators and then plugs into the PA - this deserves a different approach to designing a pickup.”
“When you're trying to get a great metal tone out of a tube amp, the number one aim is to clip (distort) the first gain stage (tube) to get that tone, so you want a really hot pickup. When you plug into a digital unit, that first gain stage is a silicone transistor and you don't want it to clip. What you want is a nice clean signal that the digital stage can manipulate. Based on this, we've decided to keep the output at a medium level, so they can be used well with either type of hardware. We instead focused on delivering a very balanced response which can easily be manipulated with EQ and effects to get your tone, because there really isn't such a thing as a ‘metal’ tone - it can vary as much as all other kinds of music. We didn't want to box players into one sound, but instead provide a tool that can be harness to create your own sound.”
PJD Guitars
Founded as a one-man operation in 2010 by Leigh Dovey, PJD has steadily grown into one of the largest British guitar manufacturers. Originally based in London from a small home workshop, Leigh inherited his love and passion for woodwork at an early age from his father, a prop maker for the Royal Opera House in Covent Gardens. 7 years later, the operation was moved to a larger facility in York where PJD has gone from strength to strength. Built using the finest materials and components and built with a level of care and attention that could only be achieved in this sort of workshop, PJD has grown a steady reputation as some of the finest guitars available. With standardised models and offerings to suit every type of player from their bare-bones Apprentice line-up to the full-bore Custom Shop range, there is a PJD for everyone.
