Moog
When you hear the word ‘synth’, one of the images that comes to mind may well be a Moog. Instantly recognisable both in sound and appearance, Moog Music are widely credited with setting the standard for synthesizer technology
Their hardware can be found in countless studio and performance spaces worldwide, and can be heard on a near-infinite number of records throughout modern music history.
A History of Moog
Robert Moog founded R.A. Moog Co. to manufacture vacuum-tube Theremin kits. He began exploring the construction of more complex electronic audio circuitry while studying towards a PhD in Engineering Physics at Cornell University in New York; this curiosity led him to change the name of his company to Moog Music and start marketing his unique hardware.
At the time, producers and composers of electronic music had to employ the use of multiple oscillators, filters and other devices to make noise – Moog’s approach aimed at streamlining this process. He began producing analogue modular synthesizers, units that contained the necessary instrumentation to both create and manipulate sound.
The Moog Synthesizer systems were showcased at various events throughout the ‘60s. They gradually gained momentum to the point that they became a category leader, paving the way for countless others in the decades to come. In 1972, they introduced the Minimoog Model D, which built on the early Moog Modular designs but packed them into neat, relatively compact enclosures. This was the first in their iconic series of all-inclusive synthesizer instruments, with the same design elements shining through their products to this day.
Robert Moog left the company in 1977 after several changes in management. He continued producing audio technology based on his own groundbreaking ideas under the moniker Big Briar. Moog Music closed down in 1993, but R. Moog himself was still unable to acquire the rights to produce and market the instruments that he pioneered until 2002, when he won the rights back after a huge legal battle.
He sadly passed away in 2005, but his legacy lives on as one of the forefathers of synthesizers and indeed electronic music. The list of notable Moog users is almost endless, but includes the likes of Rick Wakeman, Hans Zimmer, David Bowie, Cory Henry, Lenny Kravitz, Pharrell, Wendy Carlos, and many many more!
