Product Description

The Plonk is a physical modelling percussion synthesizer. It's packed full of natural, realistic sounding timbres - and can be used to make entirely unique new ones too! It was formed through a collaboration with Applied Acoustic Systems, who are a Canadian-based group of physical modelling experts. If this isn't the ideal creative partnership, we don't know what is!

Percussion Realism

Just like its intriguing name suggests, percussion is the focus here. You'll find it's just as good for crafting authentic percussion tones as it is at making otherworldly sounds. These two contrasting sonic worlds can then be effortlessly morphed between too. The Plonk is in its element when it comes to generating crisp snares, aggressive bass and powerful kicks.

Physical Modelling Tech

Plonk harnesses physical modelling tech. But what exactly is that? Well, it allows the Plonk to realistically synthesize how sound is generated by an acoustic instrument. Clever huh? This allows for the creation of un-pitched/pitched sounds, acoustic/electronic sounds and authentic/experimental sounds. The result is excellent sonic contrast across the board.

These tones are created using two dedicated elements: the resonator and the exciter. The exciter is a math-based system that's utilised to create the strike of a certain surface; the resonator virtualisation of the object itself being hit. There are multiple versions of each available to use.

Alter & Tweak

The resonator and exciter can then both be altered in a number of different ways - ensuring you can shape your sounds as you see fit. This means you'll be able to synthesize the exact sound that's made by scraping/striking a multitude of contrasting materials. If you want to model cymbals, claps, tablas, congas, toms, snares, kicks, marimbas, vibes and more, it's all possible!

These sounds are fluid too; nothing is static here. They respond to changes in velocity and modulation. The result is tones that constantly evolve, with a tonne of variation between individual hits. Sounds can overlap with one another, allowing for some serious percussive blend. Striking a new note will not stop the sound of the previous one, unless you change the parameters to do so.

Preset Potential

As well as the custom sounds you'll be able to produce yourself, the Plonk features a whole suite of presets too. It packs in up to 128 patches within its integrated memory. These presets have been programmed by a host of industry professionals, including composers and sound designers.

  • 128 user preset slots (boasting both import and export management using a USB, packed full of presets designed by Richard Devine/AAS).
